Concept

The Brilliant Influence of the Rimpa School on Japanese
Art Is Embodied in Golden Folding Screens

Folding screens painted by artists of the Rimpa school are at once elegant, refined, bold, and delicate, as seen in works such as the Wind and Thunder Gods by Sotatsu Tawaraya, Irises by Korin Ogata, and the Flowering Plants of Summer and Autumn by Hoitsu Sakai. While most of us tend to focus on the motifs in these works, once our attention is drawn to the gold and silver foil used in the backgrounds, we realise how the antique chequered pattern enhances the overall design and ornamentation of the folding screen painting. Additionally, the ethereal glow created by using genuine gold or silver, rather than gold or silver paint, leaves a lasting impression.

Recreatingthe
HakuashiPattern

A sheet of gold foil, just over 10 cm square, is affixed to the background in such a way that it overlaps with the adjacent foil at the edges. The chequered pattern, known as hakuashi, emerges due to variations in the gold content and during the brushwork applied in the production process. As the screen is used as a furnishing over several hundred years, the foil fades, wears down, and peels away, enhancing its antique texture. The refined appearance of this hakuashi has been successfully recreated by a foil artist who developed the technique through the restoration of artworks and the creation of high-precision reproductions.

About Us

Hishiya was founded by Ichiei Hirota in 1926 as a business specialising in hanao thongs for zori sandals. Later, under Yoshihide Hirota, the second president, Hishiya expanded its offerings to include zori sandal bases as well as zori sandals and handbag sets, establishing itself as a kimono accessories maker. It became a member of the Sanshukai, a group of shops specialising in high-end zori sandals, and was frequently featured in magazines such as Utsukushii Kimono.
Yasunobu Hirota, the third president, has sought to transform Hishiya from a kimono accessories manufacturer into a kimono brand with a Western influence, and established a design department for original brand items and an in-house production department for hanao thongs and sandal bases made with EVA.
